Homer H. Hillis, Jr. and Bruce H. Campbell, both of Abilene, Texas, bought, operated and sold seven radio stations in Oklahoma and Texas over the course of about 12 years -- from 1993 to 2005.
The music format they most often used while operating radio stations was one called Real Country, produced by ABC Radio in Dallas and distributed via satellite.
Each growing up in Texas, Homer and Bruce saw the potential of the classic country music format. In the late 90's, they formed a company called Dove Media and filed a trade mark application for the term "Country Legends" as it applies to the branding of music formats on the Internet and on broadcast radio.
During the past several years, about a dozen radio stations around the U.S. have entered into licensing agreements with Dove Media for use of the term "Country Legends" in their station brand, including Country Legends 97.1, KTHT, Houston, Country Legends 106.9, KTPK, Topeka, Kansas, and Country Legends 680, KKYX, San Antonio.
In 2004 Bruce operated Country Legends 106.9 in Abilene, Texas, during an interim LMA. During just one rating period, the newly developed format gained a 4.2 share in the Abilene radio ratings (Spring, 2004), the highest share the facility ever had before or since. The station was the weakest FM signal in the 16-station Abilene market.
Country Legends 106.9, KTPK, Topeka, has been the top rated radio station in the 225,000 population market (#194) for the past several years using a classic country format.
